NMI Holdings Inc
Investor Relations

NMI Holdings Inc. is the parent company of National Mortgage Insurance Corporation, a private mortgage insurer for U.S. home loans. It does not make mortgages itself. Instead, it sells mortgage insurance to lenders when a buyer puts down a small down payment and the lender wants extra protection against default. Its customers are mortgage lenders and mortgage originators, who buy insurance on loans they plan to hold or sell. The business makes money mainly by collecting insurance premiums on those loans, and it also earns income by investing the money it holds to support future claims. The coverage helps lenders feel more comfortable approving loans for homebuyers who do not have large down payments. What makes the business model different is that it sits in the middle of the housing finance system. It takes on a slice of credit risk that banks and lenders would otherwise keep on their own balance sheets. That gives NMI Holdings a role tied closely to home lending, but focused on protecting lenders rather than lending to consumers directly.

Capital returns: The company repurchased $31.4 million of stock in the quarter and still has $167 million of repurchase capacity remaining.

Outlook: Management expects defaults to trend higher from here due to seasonality and normal portfolio seasoning, but said the book remains high quality and credit trends are still favorable.
