Wealth momentum: Wealth was a standout again, with fee and other income up 15% to $2.7 billion, $39 billion of net new money, and $1.6 trillion of wealth balances, up 12% year on year.
Credit charges: The quarter included a $0.3 billion charge tied to Middle East conflict and a $0.4 billion fraud-related charge in the U.K.; management said the fraud issue looks idiosyncratic and not representative of the broader book.
Capital and simplification: CET1 ended at 14%, back within the operating range, after the Hang Seng privatization impact. HSBC also said it is on track for $1.5 billion of simplification saves and expects an up to $0.4 billion gain from the Indonesia retail sale.
Costs and buybacks: Cost growth was 3% year on year in the quarter, but management still expects around 1% full-year cost growth on a target basis. Share buybacks will be reconsidered quarterly, starting from Q2.
Hong Kong focus: Management emphasized continued strength in Hong Kong across wealth, deposits, and loans, and said Hang Seng integration synergies should begin to show more meaningfully in the second half of 2026 and into 2027-28.
