Sonoco Products Co
Sonoco Products is a packaging company that makes the containers, tubes, paperboard products, and protective packaging used to move, store, and sell goods. Its products show up in everyday items such as food, beverages, consumer products, industrial parts, and shipping materials. The company also makes rigid paper and engineered packaging used by manufacturers and brand owners. Sonoco sells mainly to other businesses, not to consumers. Its customers include food companies, consumer goods makers, industrial manufacturers, and retailers that need packaging for products in transit or on store shelves. It earns money by manufacturing packaging and selling it through long-term supply relationships, where customers rely on Sonoco to design, produce, and deliver packaging that fits their products and distribution needs. What makes Sonoco different is its role in the middle of the supply chain. It does not usually sell the finished product inside the package; instead, it supplies the package itself, which is essential for protection, presentation, and logistics. That makes Sonoco a steady industrial business tied to the constant need to package and ship goods across many end markets.

Beat: Sonoco said first-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.20 beat consensus, helped by productivity savings, price/cost actions, and early gains from its profitability plan despite lower volume mix.
Headwinds: The quarter was hit by severe winter weather, a fire at the Greenville recycling facility, and rapid input-cost inflation tied to freight, energy, resins, coatings, and other chemicals.
Outlook: Management kept full-year guidance unchanged but said results are expected to trend toward the lower end of the range because macro uncertainty and inflation are pressuring EPS more than EBITDA.
Pricing: Sonoco raised prices, including a $70 per ton U.S. uncoated recycled paperboard increase and an EUR 80 per ton increase in Europe, and said those actions are gaining traction.
Growth: The company highlighted new capacity and new business wins, including a Thailand paper can plant, an added nailwood reel line in Alabama, and new products expected in the second half.
Capital return: The board approved Sonoco’s 43rd straight annual dividend increase, lifting the payout to $2.16 per share.
