Proto Labs Inc
Proto Labs makes custom parts for engineers and product teams that need physical prototypes or small production runs fast. Customers upload a design, choose a process, and Proto Labs manufactures the parts using methods such as injection molding, CNC machining, 3D printing, and sheet metal fabrication. It serves companies in industries like industrial equipment, medical devices, aerospace, and consumer products that need working parts before committing to full-scale manufacturing. The company earns money by charging for each job it produces. Prices depend on the part design, material, process, and quantity. Instead of selling a standard product from inventory, Proto Labs sells speed, convenience, and manufacturing expertise through a digital ordering system backed by its own factories and supplier network. What makes the business different is its role as a fast bridge between design and mass production. It helps customers test ideas, make engineering changes, and fill small orders without waiting for traditional factories to set up long production runs. That makes Proto Labs especially useful when customers need custom parts quickly and repeatably, but not yet at mass-market scale.

Record quarter: Proto Labs reported record first-quarter revenue of $139.3 million, up 10.4% year over year, and said it posted its highest adjusted EPS since the third quarter of 2020.
Margins improved: Gross margin expanded to 46.2%, up 140 basis points sequentially and year over year, helped by higher factory margins, pricing actions, and a better mix.
Growth drivers: The strongest demand came from CNC machining, especially in aerospace and defense, space, satellites, drones, robotics, and metal 3D printing in the U.S.
Europe reset: Europe was still down year over year, but management said targeted cost cuts and go-to-market changes helped the region return to 11% sequential growth.
Outlook held: Full-year revenue growth guidance stayed at 6% to 8%, and second-quarter revenue guidance of $140 million to $148 million implies about 7% growth at the midpoint.
Investment ahead: Management said operating expenses should rise through the year as it funds R&D, software development, and other strategic initiatives to support longer-term growth.
