Dollar General Corp
Dollar General is a discount retailer that sells everyday essentials such as food, snacks, cleaning supplies, health and beauty items, household goods, and some seasonal and home products. It focuses on small-format stores that are easy for customers to reach, especially in rural towns and lower-income neighborhoods where big-box chains may be less convenient. The company also sells a growing mix of private-label products alongside national brands. Its main customers are value-conscious shoppers who want low prices and a quick trip for basic household needs. Dollar General makes money the same way most retailers do: it buys merchandise from suppliers, marks it up, and sells it through its stores. It also earns from a small amount of other retail-related income, but the core business is straightforward store sales. What makes Dollar General different is its role as a nearby, low-cost replacement for a larger supermarket or mass merchant trip. The company relies on a tightly controlled assortment, simple store layouts, and frequent purchases of routine items rather than big-ticket goods. That model fits customers who shop often for necessities and want convenience as much as price.

Sales: Dollar General reported first-quarter net sales of $10.8 billion, up 3.4%, and same-store sales rose 2% as traffic grew for the fourth straight quarter.
Profitability: EPS came in at $2, above internal expectations, helped by gross margin expansion that more than offset severe weather and higher fuel costs.
Guidance: The company raised full-year EPS guidance to $7.20 to $7.45 from $7.10 to $7.35, while also lifting its sales and same-store sales outlook.
Customer behavior: Management said core customers remain under pressure from inflation and high gas prices, while higher-income shoppers are also trading in more often.
Value push: The $1 price point, especially Value Valley, was highlighted as a key traffic driver, with Value Valley comping up 18.4% in the quarter.
Growth levers: Delivery, remodels, nonconsumables, and the DG Media Network were all cited as important long-term growth drivers, with delivery contributing about 70 basis points to comp.
Margins: Gross margin expanded 65 basis points and management said it still expects full-year gross margin improvement despite elevated fuel and ongoing tariff uncertainty.
