Vistra Corp
Vistra is an electricity company that sits in the middle of the power market. It owns and runs a large fleet of power plants, including natural gas, nuclear, solar, and battery storage assets, and it also sells electricity and related energy products to homes and businesses through retail brands. In simple terms, it makes and sells power. The company makes money in two main ways: by selling electricity from its own power plants into wholesale power markets, and by supplying electricity to retail customers under fixed or variable contracts. Its customers include households, small businesses, and large commercial and industrial users, as well as grid operators and other market participants that buy power from its generation fleet. What makes Vistra different is that it combines power generation with retail energy sales. That gives it direct exposure to electricity prices on both the supply side and the customer side, and it lets the company manage risk by matching plant output with customer demand. It is not a traditional utility that only sells regulated local service; it is a competitive power company that earns fees and margins from producing, trading, and delivering electricity.

Record quarter: Vistra reported first-quarter adjusted EBITDA of $1.494 billion, a record for a calendar first quarter, helped by strong generation and retail execution.
Outlook unchanged: Management reaffirmed 2026 guidance and kept the 2027 adjusted EBITDA midpoint opportunity range unchanged, supported by a highly hedged position through 2027.
Demand backdrop: The company said power demand is structurally improving across its markets, driven by data centers, industrial growth and electrification, with especially strong long-term opportunities in ERCOT and PJM.
Capital returns: Vistra accelerated buybacks in the first four months of the year, repurchasing about $525 million of stock and returning about $600 million to shareholders including the dividend.
Policy and deals: Management said FERC’s colocation order and ongoing PJM rulemaking could support more long-term deals like the Meta contract, including with both nuclear and gas assets.
Balance sheet milestone: Fitch upgraded Vistra to investment grade during the quarter, following S&P last year, and the company said that triggered release of liens under senior secured debt agreements.
